Biography
Hi my name is Wayne Hampton. I am an Avid Record Collector and music buff that has been collecting records for the past 40 years and have been involved in the music industry since I was 21
I started selling records at the Jeppe Street Fair in what is now the New Market precinct before moving to the Sunday flea markets on Rocky Street with John Bradley, when I was just out of school. I remember sharing my coffee flask with late night revellers early on Sunday morning as they were heading for home and we were setting up for the day’s trade. With the amount of stock that I accumulated I decided to open Compact Discovery in 1995 in Edenvale, selling records and cd’s from a brick & mortar shop in the CBD.

As the flagship developed I spread my wings opening a second shop with my cousin in Grahamstown on the Rhodes Campus until it burnt down in the infamous fire that gutted a number of shops. We re-emerged with a new shop in Amamzimtoti, South Of Durban that was very successful. The next venture as a specialised record collectors paradise in the heart of Sandton on Rivonia Boulevard. Alas that shop was short lived. My cohort John Bradley who was a true aficionado of all things music unfortunately passed away in 1995 from cancer. The Durban shop was sold in 2010 and the Edenvale shop was left holding up against the demise of the CD until it too closed its doors in 2020 just before the Covid Pandemic.
I continued to collect, buy and sell vinyl records and cd’s and still do to this day. Having being one of the father founders of the Jo’burg Record Fair Scene for many years and having attended the Teaspoon and Tankard fairs pre millennium.
So many Fairs, so many records and many fond memories….Ngweni Glass Village and Gilroys Brewery, Katy’s Palace, No 1 Fox Street , 44 Stanley Road, The Italian Club in Bedfordview, The Dunkeld Bowling club and now the very successful Spin Fair that is run by Benji Mudie at the Pirates Sportsclub. Not to mention the gazebos at the rock festivals and the bike rallies.
I also presented with my own 3 radio hour show on 93.8 Mix fm every Sunday Evening from 8 till 12. The late Leon Economides gave me carte blanche to play whatever I wanted to play.
Wax & Wayne is just a continuation of my magical mystery tour…. Jump aboard and don’t forget you can always blame it on the moon!
